Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
