A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
